Welcome to Raleigh. If you are reading this, you are probably thinking about a move to the Triangle. This checklist makes that move easier, one step at a time. It is 30 real tasks, in the order you should do them, from someone who has helped thousands of people make the same trip.
Before You Decide (1-4)
Visit in person.
One weekend in Raleigh tells you more than a month of online research.
Check the school lines.
School assignments shape neighborhoods and resale value, even if you do not have kids.
Time your commute.
Drive your future route on a weekday, at the hour you would actually drive it.
Run the real numbers.
Add up taxes, insurance, utilities, and HOA dues before you fall in love with a price tag.
Two to Three Months Out (5-10)
Hire a local agent.
You want someone who knows the neighborhoods, not just the listings.
Get pre-approved.
Sellers take pre-approved buyers seriously, and it tells you exactly what you can afford.
Build a moving budget.
Boxes, movers, deposits, and the first utility bills add up faster than you think.
Declutter room by room.
You will pay to move every single item, so sell, donate, or toss what you do not need.
Gather your paperwork.
Birth certificates, tax returns, and school records travel with you, so keep them in one folder.
Start the school search.
If you have kids, look at schools now, because the choice process takes time.
One Month Out (11-16)
Book your movers.
Good movers in the Triangle book out weeks ahead, so lock yours in now.
Pack what you never use.
Seasonal clothes, holiday decor, and books can go first in labeled boxes.
Transfer your utilities.
Set the end date at your old home and the start date at your new one, so you do not pay for both.
Change your address.
The post office, banks, and subscriptions all need your new address, so do it once and do it early.
Set up mail forwarding.
A forwarding order takes a few days to kick in, so start it before you close.
Say your goodbyes.
Plan a last dinner or coffee with the people you will miss, and you will be glad you did.

The Week Before (17-23)
Pack a first-night box.
Toiletries, meds, chargers, and coffee supplies will save you at midnight.
Label every box by room.
A box that says "kitchen" saves hours on moving day.
Clean as you empty.
A clean room is easier to pack and easier to leave behind.
Prep the new home.
If you can, get the keys early and clean before the truck arrives.
Check the weather.
Raleigh weather changes fast, so have a rain plan for the truck and the kids.
Confirm with everyone.
Movers, utilities, and your agent all get one call to lock the date.
Charge everything.
Phones, laptops, and power banks at 100 percent will carry you through the day.
Moving Day and After (24-30)
Be on site early.
Get there before the truck and point out the fragile stuff first.
Direct the crew.
Tell the movers which room is which, and a little direction saves a lot of lifting.
Do a walkthrough.
Check for damage as boxes come off the truck and note anything broken before the crew leaves.
Unpack the essentials first.
Beds, towels, and the coffee maker beat perfect bookshelves every time.
Meet your neighbors.
A quick hello goes a long way, and they know the best local spots.
Register for the basics.
Voter registration, a new driver's license, and utility accounts in your name can all be knocked out early.
Give yourself grace.
The boxes will not unpack themselves overnight, so take a walk and let the new place become home.
Raleigh Relocation FAQ
How far ahead should I start planning my Raleigh move?
The checklist works backward from moving day. The "Two to Three Months Out" group is the sweet spot to start. Starting earlier is fine. The point is to give yourself room to do each step, not to rush them.
Do I really need a real estate agent to relocate to Raleigh?
A local buyer's agent who knows the Triangle makes everything easier, especially if you are moving from out of town. I help buyers sight-unseen and in person. Either way, you get someone who knows the neighborhoods, not just the listings.
Should I rent or buy right after moving to Raleigh?
It depends on your plans, your budget, and when you want to settle. Renting first is a fine way to learn the area. Buying works when you are ready. There is no wrong first step, as long as it fits your life.
Where should I live in the Triangle?
Each town has its own feel. The neighborhoods on this site cover the Triangle from Apex to Wake Forest. Browse the living guides and talk to me about what fits your life. Commute, schools, and community all matter, and each town is different.
