NC State Fair 2026: Dates, Hours & What's New in Raleigh

The NC State Fair runs October 15-25, 2026 at the fairgrounds on Trinity Road in Raleigh. Here is what to know before you go, what's genuinely new this year, and how a local actually does the fair.

It's fair season in Raleigh, and it's a good one. The NC State Fair runs October 15-25, 2026, at the fairgrounds on Trinity Road, eleven straight days of rides, fair food, livestock, and live music. Here's what to know before you go, plus what's genuinely new this year.

I've been taking my family to this fair for the better part of two decades now, and it still does what a state fair is supposed to do: it makes you feel like a kid for a week and a half. The trick is knowing how to do it without burning out your wallet or your feet. This is the guide I'd hand a friend moving to the Triangle, so consider it yours.

"To give you total clarity, unfiltered local data, and zero risk, backed by a lifetime guarantee that puts your peace of mind first."

Dates & Hours: When the Fair Is Open

The fair runs Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 25. Here are the hours:

  • Thursday the 15th: opens at noon and runs to 11pm.
  • Friday and Saturday, the 16th and 17th: 9am to 11:30pm.
  • Sunday the 18th through Thursday the 22nd: 9am to 11pm.
  • Friday and Saturday, the 23rd and 24th: 9am to 11:30pm.
  • Closing Sunday the 25th: 9am to 11pm.

One thing worth knowing: the gates stop letting people in at 9:45pm, so get there earlier than that on any night. The last hour is for the people already inside, not for stragglers.

What's New in 2026

The big one this year is the Midway Event Center, a new $25 million food hall that replaces the old Restaurant Row. It opens with five vendors in 2026, with more planned to fill it out year-round. If the fair has a foodie center of gravity this year, this is it.

There are also new rides on the midway and a revamped flower show building, so even locals who have done this fair for years have something they haven't seen yet. And yes, the fair is rolling out 80+ new foods. The ones getting the most buzz: California-style birria hot cheese balls from Tacos Neza, pickle cheesecake, Biscoff 'Nana Puddin', and a jerk lobster roll from Cool Runnings Jamaican.

Before you worry about a food hall taking over the fair, relax: deep-fried stuff on a stick is still very much alive. The classics aren't going anywhere.

Free and Discount Admission Days (2026)

  • Senior Citizens' Day (Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026): Free admission for anyone aged 65 and older, plus free Bojangles' biscuits and coffee at the Senior Fun Fest starting at 9 a.m.
  • Duke Energy Military Appreciation Day (Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026): Free admission for active-duty, veteran, and National Guard military personnel plus up to three guests with valid proof of identification.
  • Smithfield Foods Hunger Relief Day (Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026): Free admission in exchange for bringing six non-perishable food items to any fair entrance gate.
  • College Day (Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026): Discounted $8 admission for North Carolina college and university students showing a valid student ID at the gate.

Other Special Event Days

  • Sensory Day presented by Bandwidth (Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026): Features a calmer atmosphere with no flashing lights or loud music from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with acoustic stages and a Chill Out Zone in the Graham Building.
  • Daily Lunch Pass Program (Monday through Friday): Free entry if you enter through Gate 9 (Trinity Road) or Gate 1 (Hillsborough Street) between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. by purchasing a $20 cash lunch card at the gate and returning the card to the same gate by 1:30 p.m. for a full $20 cash refund.

Here is exactly how the Daily Lunch Pass Program works so there are no surprises:

  • The Deposit: You pay a $20 cash deposit at the gate between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday) to get a special lunch card.
  • The Refund: If you leave the fair and return that lunch card to the exact same gate by 1:30 p.m., you get your $20 cash back.
  • The Catch: The $20 cash deposit is strictly to guarantee you leave on time. You still have to pay the food vendors directly for whatever lunch you buy inside.

Essentially, it allows locals and workers to pop into the fair strictly for lunch on their break without paying the standard ticket price to get through the gates.

If you stay past 1:30 p.m., you forfeit your $20 deposit, which then counts as your admission ticket for the day.

The Classics Worth Your Calories

Some things at the fair you just do, every single year. Kettle corn is the baseline snack, the thing you grab on the way in and pick at all day. Funnel cakes for dessert, obviously. And the smoky pork chop sandwich is a North Carolina rite of passage, so don't skip it.

Beyond the food, make time for the livestock area and the flower show. The giant pumpkins alone are worth the walk, they are absurd in the best way. And when the sun goes down, the midway at night, the lights and the crowds, is still the best free show at the fair.

Tips From a Local

Here's how I'd do the fair, in a handful of plain-spoken tips:

A wide view across the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh showing the midway, exhibit buildings, and fairgoers.
  • Parking at the fairgrounds is free. No shuttle dance required, which already beats a lot of big events in the area.
  • Go on a weekday early if you can. The crowds are lighter and the lines are shorter. Opening Thursday usually turns out to be a sleeper hit for exactly this reason.
  • Bring cash. Some stands are cash-only, and the ATM line is not how you want to spend your evening.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot, more than you think, and your feet will remind you.
  • If you're bringing kids, set a meetup spot before you split up. Pick a landmark everyone can find, and agree on it before anyone disappears toward the midway.
